The Authorities

The practical side of travel is a little like camping - you've just gotta be prepared, and everything will be fine.

This section covers many of the things you need to be prepared for.  Don't let these scare you, though - follow our advice and you'll be fine (mostly!).

The most obvious and most important concern is your health, with malaria a special concern if you're hitting the tropics.    Next, a few simple safeguards should help you hold onto your stuff, and keep youself from any unpleasant situations.  And, depending on where you go, you may need to be ready for some interesting and potentially threatening examples of the handiwork of Mother Nature.

Sadly, relationships often suffer on the road.  Don't let this happen to you - read this section if you're going with that special someone.   No matter who you're going with, sometimes it's hard to keep your head together on the road.  This is an important page, and anyone going off for the first time should read this.

Naturally, women travelling alone or in groups may have some unique concerns.  These are covered briefly here.

And lastly, a very important subject, dealing with "the authorities."  We like to feel safe and comfortable on the road, so getting and staying on the right side of the law wherever we go is a high priority.  Read this section for advice on how not to ruffle official feathers.
