Good travel occurs when you've planned the basics, and you wing the rest.  Because, if you don't plan the basics, you'll find they have a nasty habit of making things complicated.

Since we think the correct attitude is the most important thing for successful travel, we figure you can't start too soon.  See what we have to say under Planning Attitude.

The biggest question of all to answer is how long to travel.  We say as long as your head and your bank account can take, but click on How Long? for some guidelines and advice.

You'll probably want a destination.  You gotta buy that ticket to somewhere. So, under Where To? we give advice on choosing a destination, or at least a direction..  For specific info on cheap destinations, click here for the Destinations page.

One thing you definately don't want to screw up is money.  Visit our Money and Finances for advice on how much you'll need, and how you should keep it and get it.

You wouldn't want to leave without packing.  Visit the Packing page for critical advice on stuff you should really bring, stuff you shouldn't bring, and stuff you might think about bringing.

We're very impressed with seasoned travellers who go without guide books.  They use the local resources to figure things out, and by doing so probably get to meet more people than most travellers.  But we haven't gotten there ourselves yet, and if you're just starting as a traveler, you'll want a guide book.We have some basic advice on choosing a guidebook here.
